In response, I agree with much of what Christine said. But white children, in predominantly white schools also need to learn about the battle for civil rights. From international history it is clear that civil rights is not limited to the color of a person's skin. As a person of German heritage, I can tie in WWII atrocities when discussing US civil rights.

It is a positive thing that there is so much passion around what "kids need to know" but there is very little thought to the fact that much of the discussion comes from people who are not of the "race" that they are publishing books about.
