I'll be interested, too, in hearing the responses to your question. I've been out of teaching for more than ten years now, so don't feel qualified to answer. However, some of my books deal directly with the Jim Crow era.
See ARCTIC EXPLORER (Matthew Henson) and WHAT I HAD WAS SINGING (Marian Anderson) in particular.
