Harry Potter and Naomi Shihab Nye have been the favorite parts of my professional life (in addition to our patrons, staff, beautiful building and being such a vital part of our city/community). My two stepsons were about the same ages as Harry and we read the earlier books aloud. Once, we built a quinnsey in the back yard (a snow shelter) took a candle and read aloud until my fingers were too cold to turn the pages. The boys owned the audio books and all four of us fell happily asleep many summer nights listening to Jim Dale.
We turned Marquette into Hogwarts prior to the release of Deathly Hallows and involved most of the downtown. Several thousand people attended, many who drove hundreds of miles to be part of this. Quite the sight seeing hundreds of witches and wizards running the streets and visiting shops on a scavenger hunt, parading during a costume contest, playing quiddich, drinking butter beer, etc. DDA staff placed decorated brooms in the flag holders on the street light poles. We filled the library with owls. Stores became Hogsmeade shops (Donckers, our real candy shop, became Honeydukes and did their best day's business in 100 years!) We showed the first HP film outdoors where the Farmers' Market is held. Everyone stayed even as temps dropped too far for July and we wrapped up in blankets! There were a few tears when we lined up for our books at midnight. It was fun, colorful, everyone was kind. Our man with the boa constrictor was able to calm and charm the two people holding small protest signs who were afraid of s nakes and Harry. He even got them to pet Pandora, then they left! I'll never forget Harry! Well, I do have a life-size cardboard cutout of him in my office, and a poster under the nameplate next to my door. I keep a stash of extra HP books in my office when our two shelves-full are checked out. Continues to make a lot of patrons happy to share this small library secret. All was well. :)
