I think the Harry Potter sensation energized reading for children, young ad ults, and adults as well! It's fascinating to see HP's scope of influence. So many teens read both YA and adult books, and have flocked to the adult reads such as Lev Grossman's The Magicians, Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind (both of which won Alex Awards) and his recent sequel, The Wise Ma n's Fear.

It certainly seems that publishers have been on the lookout for new books t hat tap into the Harry Potter fan base. Our teens have also taken an incre ased interest in fantasy and science fiction in general (or speculative fic tion as one of our English teachers calls it.) Harry Potter ignited a wond erful explosion of great books in that genre, and the awards categories (i. e., Printz, Alex) and ALA book lists have recognized their excellence and p opularity. At least it seems to me that the genre has taken a larger share of recognition.

July

Harry Potter and the Final Farewell. With the release of the last Harry Pot ter movie on July 15 (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2), a sign ificant chapter in children's literature is coming to its close . . . or is it? The Harry Potter books helped define a generation of children's relati onship to books and reading, and their effect on the publishing world was n o less significant. Throughout July, we invite you to reflect on the lastin g impact of the Harry Potter books on children and the children's literatur e world. And once the movie comes out, feel free to share your thoughts on Harry Potter's final foray on film.
