I am excited to see this compilation grow as a resource. For older readers please note two books by Jessica L. Powers: The Confessional, a novel f or young adults that explores racial tension and violence on the U.S.-Mexic o Border, and This Thing Called the Future, a coming-of-age novel set i n post-apartheid, AIDS-ravaged South Africa.
Jessica Powers is the creator of a new website that highlights books and au thors writing for children about social justice topics and issues: www.the piratetree.com

The Seattle Public Library's Global Reading Challenge program for 4th and 5th graders has a list of chapter books used each year in the program. The se titles represent a diversity of backgrounds--some taking place in the US A and others in other parts of the world.
