I think these picture books do a wonderful job of making heart connections with the Middle East: Sitti's Secrets by Naomi Shihab Nye and The Librarian of Basra by Jeanette Winter.

Books that lend perspective on life in African countries while helping others to appreciate what we may take for granted include: Galimoto by Karen Lynn Williams, Beatrice's Goat by Page McBrier, One Hen by Katie Smith Milway, My Painted House My Friendly Chicken and Me by Maya Angelou and The Day Gogo Went to Vote by Eleanor Batezat Sisulu.

As for books that help illuminate what it may be like for global travelers to land in America: Big Red Lollipop by Rukhsana, One Green Apple by Eve Bunting and for older readers... Lowji Discovers America by Candace Fleming.

There are so many really, really good books! I hope someone plans to compile.
