I think it is important though to realize that sometimes when a family is going through hard times they DON'T have a community supporting them. In this day and age we move for the job, and when things do go well we don't have anyone to lean on.
It is happening all over the country to friends and colleagues of ours and those we don't know as well. And internet, blackberries, cell phones and such are keeping us connected to those far away, but we aren't spending as much time out on the porch connected with those right next door.
Even in the "old days" some poor communities were less cohesive than others. My husband grew up in extreme poverty and he can tell you he has few good memories of it and no sense of community. He remembers roaches, rats, no heat, no food and a lot of other negative things.
That was something he definately wanted to rise above.
