Another historical book that stands out to me is Betty Smith's A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN. It was certainly about a very poor family and how they, particularly Francie, succeed and prosper and grow in the midst of poverty. I'm not sure it is children's or young adult, but childhood (maybe fourth or fifth grade) is when I read it so I've always thought of it as a pre-adolescent book.
