Karen Hesse just has a way... so much of her work is affecting in this way. I agree.
I haven't participated fully in this discussion, but I realize so clearly b ased on the quality and quantity of the posts that this is a pervasive topi c in literature... so much moreso than I had fully contemplated before. It seems to touch us at a visceral level, whether or not we've actually exp erienced such poverty.
The first book that came to mind for me was mentioned in one of the first p osts... Tight Times by Barbara Shook Hazen. Eve Bunting's Fly Away Home, also mentioned earlier, is another that pulls the reader in so completel y and leaves you a little different than when you first began. Another ( forgive me if it's been mentioned) that I find as transformational as a pic ture book can be is Leah's Pony. I love this one because it paints a ver y true picture of how even a child can have the power to make the impossibl e possible, under the most difficult of circumstances. To me, these are all books to make you think, and feel, and weep and books that stretch your humanity just a little (or a lot).
