The staff at my elementary school in rural Vermont had a book discussion last fall about Katherine Paterson's The Same Stuff as Stars. While it's almost 10 years old, this story of struggle and dignity rang very true to those of us who work with kids like this every day.

Lynne Rae Perkins' Home Lovely and Carolyn Coman's What Jamie Saw are also older books (1995 and 1996) that show the challenges faced by young children from poor rural families.

It's a credit to these talented authors and illustrators that they faced this uncomfortable topic head on. They captured the pride and unwillingness to ask for "handouts" that we see in many families, regardless of their children's needs. I appreciate seeing new books on this issue, because it is still with us.
