A book written by Barbara Shook Hazen and illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman addresses this issue and is called, TIGHT TIMES. Although it was first published in 1979, it is both timely for today and timeless. It is still available in paperback.

An urban child lives with his parents in a small apartment. He is not allowed to have a dog, because of "tight times." Although a loving unit, the depicted family, with Hyman's mastery of body language, is truly living on the edge. Within a good story, this book directly addressing financial difficulties. It fosters support of children in difficult financial situations without being didactic.
