Memorization of Text

Everybody,
I've enjoyed the discussion on reading aloud and agree with Angie's point about recitation. When I go into schools I read my picture books without looking at the words so that students can focus on the pictures and I can make sure everybody is paying attention. Inevitably, some kids ask about this. When I say that I've memorized the text, they are amazed. I ask if they have songs they've memorized and most do, but they don't think of stories or poetry as things that can be memorized.
Most of us know older people who can still whip off a string of memorized poetry. Perhaps it's time for a resurgence of memorized poetry.
