poetry out loud

We often run an evening program at our public library during in the month of April at which we encourage people to read poetry out loud.

We invite them to bring a poem--something they like or something they've written or both. We have a variety of poetry books standing on display and piled onto a table in our program room and encourage people to come up and choose something to read, especially if they haven't brought any material to the program. Everyone participates--kids, moms, dads, grandparents, aunts, uncles and us librarians, too, of course! The poems range from short verses by Ogden Nash to long story poems like "The Highwayman."

It's always been a very successful program--not so much because we get a huge turn-out (usually in the 15-30 range) but because everyone ends up having so much fun. Great returns for an evening that requires very little planning on our part.
