When I taught first grade, I brought in many books of poetry that appealed to younger students--augmented by the collections that the school librarian suggested. Then students looked through them, chose the one that most appealed to them--lots of Shel Silverstein at the time!--and then worked on memorizing them with me and with parent volunteers to share for an annual poetry party that they presented in honor of their mothers. They loved it! Some students chose long, ambitious poems; others chose shorter ones, but I think that everyone in the class learned most of their peers' poems, as they rehearsed and shared. We all enjoyed the experience, which became a school tradition for many years, even when I no longer taught there.
