Funny about reading Love That Dog to the driver on a long trip. Four of the six in my family had already read Love that Dog but two had not. As we were planning to share Hate that Cat during our vacation, we listened to the audio version of Love that Dog during the long drive there. I agree that audio books are often overlooked and can be not only dramatically wel l-read and an enhancement for performance purposes... but they can provide practical answers sometimes when timing, location, or other factors prevent a more straightforward approach (I would get carsick reading aloud on a tr ip :-))
I would love to know there are more options to hear poetry read aloud by po ets or others. I remember fondly my high school experience of hearing ee cummings read his work aloud (on vinyl from my public library). It adde d so much to my understanding of the person and the poetry and the sounds b ecame indelible for me. Hearing in the artist's own voice can certainly help us construct meaning that is closer to what the writer intended.
