Strong girls and women

How about going waaaaay back to two powerful and complex teen girls whom I haven't forgotten this many years later (80s? maybe 70s?): Ann Burdan from Robert C. O'Brien's "Z for Zachariah," who seems to be the only survivor of a nuclear holocaust, but isn't, and who must learn to deal with the other survivor; and Kate from Robert Cormier's "After the First Death," a novel told in alternating voices, with Kate being responsible for a bus full of very young children overpowered by terrorists. Two plots that haven't lost their currency, unfortunately.

Great discussion!
