One of my favorite childhood heroines was Francie of A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN. I used to re-read the book every Christmas break because it was okay to stay up late so I could read as long as I wanted. I think the book resonated with me because she worked hard to better herself and her family. She was not strong in the "spunky" sense, but she seemed strong to me because she had a strong sense of who she was and who she wanted to be.
