I have been enjoying the discussion and making notes on the stories that I am unfamiliar with. Usually I am a lurker, but this time I am being a strong woman, and making my thoughts known. When a book resonates with me it stays with me long after I have read it, and I see scenes from the book, pictures in my mind. That is the case with A girl Named Disaster by Nancy Farmer and Island of the Blue Dolphins. by Scott O'Dell. It's interesting that both books are Newbery Honor books, and both about survival in strange lands. In a Girl Named Disaster, Nhamo, a young African girl is amazing and endures drowning, starvation, and so much more. In the Island of the Blue Dolphins, Karana is a young Indian girl who teaches us basic survival techniques:, such as find food, find a clean source of water, find shelter, protect yourself. I still get chills when I think about both books. I continue to booktalk Island of the Blue Dolphins. Both books will always be my favorites.
