""there are questions as to why society LETS those characteristics be coded as masculine. Who wrote the rule, in other words, about what constitutes male/masculine and female/feminine?"

I too see this is an important statement, and want to mention several recent titles that deal with the idea of what it is to be feminine...

Sophomore Switch by Abby McDonald--"This is 21st century girl power at its best. McDonald has created two strong characters and placed them great fish out of water scenarios. She refreshingly and honestly treats them both with respect, showing that women can be fun and sexy and still have a brain, and that you can be smart and brainy and creative. Having sex doesn’t make you a slut, and no one should be defined by a single action alone."

Jekel Loves Hyde by Beth Fantaskey--"I also have a quibble with the comment from the Kirkus Review about what happens to Jill when she ingests the formula. Is it stereotypical? Perhaps, but having been a Jill Jekel in the past, I can tell you that at least for me, it rings true. Is it a statement about society and gender? Probably so, but I also see a sort of naivete that comes from lack of experience and not knowing that the opposite of being a good girl is not necessarily becoming a slut, but that there is power in claiming all sides of who you are." http://readspace.net/2010/05/review-jekel-loves-hyde/

These are the kind of complex women that appeal to me today...
