I am about halfway through Libba Bray's new book Beauty Queens, and it is definitely a girl power book! While it doesn't seem that way initially (only one of the girls appears to have any common sense) as the story progresses, the individuality and the talents of each of the girls start to emerge, and they morph from bubbleheaded beauty pageant girls to strong, intelligent, self-sufficient young women.  Female sexuality is positively portrayed, and Bray really delves into female self-image, and the impact of media on how girls see themselves. It's extremely zany, and more along the lines of Going Bovine than Gemma Doyle, but a worthwhile read for all girls!

Speaking of Gemma Doyle, she's another great female character, and the trilogy is also by LibbaBray.

Rachel  A classic book has never finished saying what it has to say.
