Christina McTighe's post made me think that it is something about a girl character's exceptionality that makes her stand out as strong. Of the two girls in the Mysterious Benedict Society (Constance Contraire and Kate Wetherall), Kate struck me as a stronger character, exceptional because of her physical strength and speed, as well as her advanced understanding of spatial awareness.
