While many of my favorite strong female characters come from historical fic tion (Lizzie Bright, and Mattie from A Northern Light) one of my all-time f avorite characters is Chris Crutcher's Sarah Byrnes, from Staying Fat for S arah Byrnes. Despite physical and emotional abuse and the vulnerability of living with horrible facial burn scars, Sarah remains strongly in charge o f her own destiny. She refuses to buckle in the face of bullies and is fie rcely loyal to friends.

Another wonderful character from realistic fiction is Vera Dietz, from A.S. King's Please Ignore Vera Dietz. Vera is flawed and makes bad choices. H owever, she survives her dysfunctional family life and the death of her bes t friend, overcoming the pull of alcohol and grief. She is wonderfully rea listic and shows that courage can take many forms. Vera is one of my favor ite characters from a fabulous collection of 2010 books.
