Two authors come to mind when I think of strong female protagonists:

L.A. Meyer - the eight-part Bloody Jack series introduces readers to a str ong female character with natural leadership abilities and a strong sense o f fair play. In addition to enjoying Mary "Jacky" Faber's antics on land an d sea, readers come to appreciate her humanity and learn some history along the way.

Books by author Ann Rinaldi also portray strong female characters throughou t a variety of historical periods.
