I'm a big fan of Laurie Valentine in Iain Lawrence's The Giant-slayer.

In the spring of 1955, she visits her friend Dickie in the hospital who has contracted polio and is confined to an iron lung. She is soon making regular visits, keeping Dickie and the others enthralled with her storytelling. She is so convincing, the children begin to see themselves in her stories. . . . the power of an individual, the power of story. Great stuff.
