So many to list, including many noted by others. Here's one I haven't seen mentioned: I liked Keeping Corner by Kashmira Sheth (Wisconsin author! Yayy!).
This book has terrific, realistic character development...even though some horrible, tragic things happen to the main character, she is able to take some actions that make her life more bearable and grows in her understanding of her own life in the context of her country and world. I liked this book because it takes place in India in the early part of the 1900s and deals with the reality of women's roles/rights then and there, but also shows an opening up in thought (thanks in no small part to Gandhi), and how the main character uses it to help herself. Excellent summary in CCBC Choices:
