Just a note about the female characters in When You Reach Me. I think of each of them as strong, actually... because each of them was dealing with some significant life challenge(s) and each measured up in her own tough way. I actually regard Julia as most impressive... because despite being burdened by a seemingly blessed existence and despite being viewed superfi cially by others because of her charmed circumstances, she emerged as h er own woman... smart, caring and strong... and that was for me the nicest surprise of the whole book.
Funny, when Megan refers to it as historical fiction, which it is, I laugh. .. because I think of the late 1970s setting as very recent! I must be aging, after all.
Glad to have Clever Beatrice mentioned, also. She is fabulous.
Another woman worth noting is Joanna in Notes From the Dog. Regardless o f what fate seemed to dealing her, she was proactively the mover and shaker in improving the lives of every single person around her... courageously. She deliberately helped each of the main characters to awaken to th e better part of himself. For a man's man like Gary Paulsen, Notes took sensitivity AND "guts".
