My latest favorite "girl" book is Fearless: the Story of Racing Legend Louise Smith, by Barb Rosenstock, with illustrations by Scott Dawson. This picture book biography has a great voice ("She revved her engine. Felt it rumble in her chest. She smashed down the gas pedal...and left those boys flying in the dust!"), wonderful illustrations, and is short enough to use for read-alouds with younger elementary kids. Looking at the "dark side of pink," Cinderella Ate My Daughter, by Peggy Orenstein seems to be touching a nerve in our library system - there are 65 holds on 26 copies of this book, so I haven't actually seen it yet.
