Jess Leader's debut, NICE AND MEAN, is told in first person by two very different seventh-grade girls in alternating chapters . The "mean" one is part of a popular group, but the way this girl acts toward her so-called friends? Whew! I'm not sure how she's stayed popular so long. The "nice" girl is nice in a way that gets her taken advantage of. Both end up making poor choices related to a video project they're collaborating on and get themselves into trouble. Both also have interesting and realistic emotional journeys that I think would resonate with many female readers of any age.
