I found that serving on the William Morris Award committee last year really opened my eyes to the number of good first books for young adults that are being published. The winner wasn't mentioned here but The Freak Observer by Blythe Woolston was published by a new imprint - Carolrhoda Lab - by a new author - and the manuscript came in through the slush pile. Sometimes it does happen!
