In 1995, I established the Lee Bennett Hopkins/IRA Promising Poet Award given every three years to a poet who has published no more than two books. The Award comes with a cash prize and a medallion.
Since 1995 there have been six winners, among them Kristine O'Connell George for her first book, THE GREAT FROG RACE AND OTHER POEMS (Clarion), and most recently, Greg Neri for his first book CHESS RUMBLE (Lee & Low). Both poets have gone on to very successful careers. George has received countless accolades for future works; Neri's last book published last year, YUMMY (Lee and Low) became a Coretta Scott King Honor Book, one honor among many accolades.
My aim in founding the Award is not only to promote poetry, but to honor a first book of poetry by a newcomer to the field of children's literature.
Further information on the Award can be found at _www.reading.org_ (http://www.reading.org)
