Have you looked at Orca Publishers? They specialize in good books by great authors written for children and young adults with reading deficits. The Orca Soundings line is for teens (mature content) and the reading level goe s down to second grade. They also have a wonderful middle school selection of books. Check out the Orca website and ask for a catalog. These are quality books with high appeal to young adults, but written at easier reading levels. They are not the typical Hi-Lo books, an d kids truly love reading them!! More importantly, they make kids feel lik e successful readers.

reluctant readers, etc.
As a librarian in a middle school (grades 6-8) I am faced daily with trying to recommend books to our students. Through Star Reading (please no booin g or hissing about AR) we have determined that the reading range of our stu dents to be 1-12 grade.
I had always suspected that we had some students on the low reading range, but not that low. I am trying to find books they can read (on their level ) that aren't too "babyish" and it's quite a problem. How a student can ge t to 8th grade and only read on a 2rd -4th grade level is beyond my underst anding but I am trying to get books into their hands.
