It is exactly those layers and time periods that made the book feel a little belabored to me. I am wondering who the audience will be. Must deal with two historical periods, keep track of two competing (but yet related) story lines -- I found myself wanting to skip over the 1917 "stories" and get on with the main attraction. In fact, I did on my initial read and upon my reread (with the flashback narratives), with a few exceptions, did not feel I had missed much. I had the idea after reading the first inserted episode. Wonder how many young readers will have the same impulse?
