I think it tells us that the committees made some brave decisions. It's think it's great that a first time author won the Newbery and a first time illustrator won the Caldecott.
I thoroughly enjoyed Moon Over Manifest and all it's layers and time periods and the way it came together at the end. Also Turtle in Paradise is excellent... interesting that there were two books this year with essentially the same plot of a girl being left by a parent in a new town during the Depression.
Amos McGee is a book that I think will stand the test of time... a lovely, timeless story in the vein of Good Night Gorilla.

Award winners I too was surprised by my lack of knowledge of many of the winners this year. What does that tell us? I have ordered them and will see for myself. -- Elisabeth LeBris, MLS
