I apologize for posting this information so late—I know many people are en route to San Diego (as I will be, tomorrow). San Francisco Public Library’s children’s librarians, and a few from the SF Unified School District, took part in a Mock Geisel last m onth. Two groups discussed the following books:
Aggie the Brave (Ries, Lorie) Bink and Gollie (DeCamillo, Kate and Allison McGhee) Brownie and Pearl Step Out (Rylant, Cynthia) Fly Guy Meets Fly Girl (Arnold, Tedd) Ling and Ting, Not Exactly the Same (Lin, Grace) Slow Down for Manatees (Arnosky, Jim) We are In a Book (Willems, Mo) What About Bear (Bloom, Suzanne)
Both groups had a definite winner, and it was We are In a Book! (Mo Willems ). Group 1 had one Honor book, Ling and Ting, Not Exactly the Same. Group 2 had two Honor books, Ling and Ting, and Fly Guy Meets Fly Girl.
I also took part in a Mock Caldecott discussion with current and retired pu blic and school librarians, book sellers and editors, and children’ s book authors and illustrators. We discussed these books:
Art & Max by David Wiesner (Clarion) Ballet for Martha: Making Appalachian Spring by Jan Greenberg and Sandra Jo rdan; illustrated by Brian Floca (Flash Point) Beaver Is Lost by Elisha Cooper (Schwartz & Wade) Boss Baby - Marla Frazee (Beach Lane) Boy in the Garden by Allen Say (Houghton Mifflin) City Dog, Country Frog by Mo Willems; illustrated by Jon Muth (Hyperion) Interrupting Chicken by David Ezra Stein (Candlewick) It's a Book by Lane Smith (Roaring Brook) Knuffle Bunny Free: An Unexpected Diversion by Mo Willems (Balzer + Bray) Me, Frida by Amy Novesky; illustrated by David Diaz Snook Alone by Marilyn Nelson; illus. by Timothy Basil Ering (Candlewick)
Our winners: Mock Caldecott Award City Dog, Country Frog by Mo Willems, illustrated by Jon J Muth
Honor Books Art & Max by David Wiesner Snook Alone by Marilyn Nelson; illustrated by Timothy Basil Ering
We’ll see what happens on Monday! Safe travels, everyone!
