Some of my surprising favorites of this year are:
Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi -- This futuristic sci-fi was eerily believable because of the Gulf oil spill Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver -- An absorbing "Groundhog Day" meets "Carrie" teen drama reminding me to wear my seat belt Nothing by Janne Teller -- Haunting and philosophical with eloquent turns of phrase 13 Words by Lemony Snicket, illustrated by Maira Kalman -- Absurd, brilliant, fresh
They may not be the best of the year, but looking back at what I've read in 2010, these titles were fresh/eye-opening/delightful.
