I'm sure to think of a bunch more later, but off the top of my head, here a re the books I've loved this year that have really stayed with me.
Last Summer of the Death Warriors by Francisco X. Stork (he is fast becomin g one of my favorite YA authors for books that pack a punch and get kids to think about deeper topics like ethics, how to live a meaningful life, etc.)
Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi - fabulous dystopian world, great action a dventure, wonderful characters, thought provoking themes! Plus, I saw the author at ALA and he's adorable.
Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver - even if the concept sounds like the movie, Ground Hog's Day, I found a fresh perspective and real meaning in this boo k. The teens I work with LOVE this book.
Heist Society by Ally Carter - just for the pure fun of it!
Incarceron by Catherine Fisher - half fairy tale, half science fiction, won derful world building!
The Girl Who Fell from the Sky by Heidi W. Durrow - a mother, her baby and light-skinned, biracial teen daughter fall from the roof of a high rise apa rtment. Only the teen survives. Now she must live with the African Americ an grandmother she doesn't know and find her way in a black world. This te rrific novel investigates identity and family while gradually uncovering th e mystery of what happened on the roof.
Trash by Andy Mulligan - one of those little gems that is both heartbreakin g and uplifting, a mystery adventure that will have you cheering at the end.
The Things a Brother Knows by Dana Reinhardt - achingly real portrait of a boy who comes back from war.
Revolver by Marcus Sedgwick - riveting historical fiction! This one's a re al thriller!
The Card Turner by Louis Sachar - who would have known bridge could be so e ntertaining!! I loved this book.
Bruiser by Neal Shusterman - totally original! How does Shusterman keep co ming up with these thought provoking, totally engrossing novels?
Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly - lush blend of contemporary and historical worlds.
So many good books! Pam
