DIRT ROAD HOME by Watt Key doesn't seem to have garnered much attention, but this claustrophobic novel set in an Alabama Juvenile "Detention Center" reveals the harrowing details of life as a young non-conformist tries mightily and unsuccessfully to keep from aligning himself with one or the other of two ruling gangs. Adding corrupt adults to the mixture heightens the sense of despair of the likable protagonist.
