I have three favorites this year: I loved THE HIVE DETECTIVES in the Scient ists in the Field series, and COUNTDOWN by Debbie Wiles.  These books, th ough very different from one another -- one a novel and the other nonfict ion, still struck me as so wonderful and inventive in the way they combin e context and information with fascinating and compelling storytelling.

My other favorite is THE YEAR MONEY GREW ON TREES, a sweet, almost old-fash ioned novel about a group of kids who run an apple orchard for a year.  T he author, Aaron Hawkins, is a professor of electrical engineering and the book includes delightful diagrams of irrigation systems and math proble ms.  And (maybe because I also have sort of a double life and write mor e grant proposals than books)  I love that on his website he promotes n ot only this book but his new work, "The Handbook of Optofluidics."  (Wha tever that is!)

I agree with Carling--I had so much fun reading "The Cardturner" by Louis S achar.  It really surprised me how a book about bridge could make me want to stay up all night to finish it!  I also just finished "A Long Walk To Water" by Linda Sue Park and felt it was a great story about a Lost Boy of Sudan told in a way that kids could understand.
