I hope you don't mind me popping into this discussion to let you all know about the winners of the Australian Prime Minister's Literary Prize. This i s a very new award, only about 3 years old, and this year for the first time there were new categories for children's and YA fiction. The prize money is substantial--$100,000 tax free--and we are very pleased that the children's/YA winners receive the same as the writers of adult fiction and non-fiction (not always the case in the state literary awards).
The 2010 winners are:
Children's fiction winner *Star Jumps* by Lorraine Marwood Young adult fiction winner *Confessions of a Liar, Thief and Failed Sex God* by Bill Condon
Both authors and books are known to me: Lorraine's book is a verse novel, and I wrote the teachers' notes for Bill's picaresque novel, set in the Vietnam War era in Australia. The shortlists for both categories were very strong, and the winners highly deserving.
