I am thrilled that Mockingbird won! I just read it Saturday and was enthra lled with the insight into a child with Asperger's and the grieving of a fa ther and daughter for their loss of family member(s). I laughed, I cried, I thought, I sighed . . . really good signs of a great read! As a divorced mother who raised two kids -- one a scholar and the other fil led with ADD and learning disabilities, this book really struck close to my heart. Erskine certainly touched on difficult subjects and handled them w ith finesse and tack. This book is not for the reader who wants only prett y stories and happy endings, but if you want to experience life as someone else, this works! Slipping into Caitlin's brain and understanding all she is dealing with stretches the reader's empathy and should help develop tole rance for those different than ourselves. This book is sure to be a hit with the middle readers (grades 4-6) that pas s things along to their close friends and bury themselves in their beds wit h great books eve ry night! I expect it to be a hit with a number of my tea cher friends who love kids and love books as well!
