My favorite science fiction novel of 2010 is Ship Breaker (with Incarceron coming in second,) so I was thrilled to see it on this list! I'm happy to see the postapocalyptic dystopian novel move to a post global warming, envi ronmentally damaged future world. The characters, both human and "half hum an" are realistic and frightening in a world where survival often dictates brutality, and leaves little room for morality.

And yet, there is ample possibility for discussions about what makes up a r eal family, what is the cost of loyalty, how do ethics and morality affect survival as a human being?

Best of all, Bacigalupi is a fabulous story teller. This is gripping, edge of your seat, can't turn the page fast enough writing. Readers become inv ested in the characters and the world they inhabit, and as a result will lo ok at our current world through a wider, more complex lens.

I'm hoping Ship Breaker takes the prize! Pam

2010 National Book Award Youth Literature Finalists

I'd now like to open the discussion for the second half of November, when w e turn our attention to the finalists for the 2010 National Book Award for Young People's Literature. They are:

"Dark Water" by Laura McNeal (Alfred A. Knopf) "Lockdown" by Walter Dean Myers (Amistad/HarperCollins) "Mockingbird" by Kathryn Erskine (Philomel) "One Crazy Summer" by Rita Williams-Garcia (Amistad/HarperCollins) "Ship Breaker" by Paolo Bacigalupi (Little, Brown)
