I am a huge picturebook fan - all ages can benefit from the many sophistica ted choices out there now. They model literary skills of all kinds and the y mimic the characteristics of the digital world many children interact wit h daily. It's dismaying to hear that there may be widespread scaling back with elements like color or special designs but, for example, Suzy Lee's " Mirror" is limited to black on white space with some splashes of yellow in this wordless book. Jeannie Baker has a fabulous picturebook that works lik e two books side by side - one in English opening right/left, the other a p arallel story in Moroccan, opening left/right. Both were featured in this past week's Sunday Times. Despite their reporting of lagging sales, they h ad a wonderful multiple-page (color) supplement that listed the 2010 best i llustrated books. The possibilities for the picturebook format are so rich.
Amazon carried all of them. I've found fantastic books by foreign pictureb ook author/illustrators - just about any title I've wanted to examine - on Amazon for decent prices, 2-day free delivery for purchases. Jacquelin Smith Children's Literature Instructor University of Northern Iowa
