When I gave that mini-introduction about the cost of picture books, I neglected to say that all books are sold at a discount, and the discount depends on the number of books sold to an account. The order need not be for a single title but a mix of different titles. The average discount ranges from 48% to 50%...sometimes more.
In textbook publishing, the royalty is based on the net price...meaning the price after the discount. In trade publishing, which includes children's books, the royalty is based on the retail price of the book, not net receipts.
