This is the time of year we see TOY DRIVES all over communities. The TODAY show, firehouses, community centers, et. al. RARELY do we see BOOK DRIVES.
Actually, the bookstore where I worked in high school (Lift Bridge Book Shop in Brockport, NY) has a partnership with the local toy shelf. The store collects donations (in the form of "add a dollar to your purchase"), then has local scouting troupes come into the store to pick out books they think kids their age would want to get as gifts. The books go to the toy shelf, and when the parents/guardians who qualify go to the toy shelf, they get to pick one toy AND one book per child.
It's been going on for years and seems to work really well. From my perspective, the best part was always watching the scout groups come in and shop for the books to be donated--they have a great time and are so excited!
