Dr. Kathy Latrobe at the University of Oklahoma School of Library and Information Studies emphasized to us that picture books help children develop visual literacy--a term that is often debated as to it's exact definition, but which has connotations for fully understanding and learning later on, as well as interpreting inputs from the outside world (signs, media, maps, photographs, etc.)
