Thanks for reminding me of this study, Charles. I remember reading it with interest because I think it pointed in the direction of a social dimension to reading we seldom take into account when teaching kids to read.

I've seen a few things in the many schools I've visited that seem to support the social dimension of reading. The simplest is the teacher who actively reads for pleasure, talks up books she loves, and willingly reads books her students recommend. Another practice I love is the multiple copy shelves at my local middle school library. The librarian there gets it that middle schoolers like to read in packs. So every year she buys 3 or 4 books in a set of 6-8. They are all shelved together so that kids know where to go and engage in what ever process they use to choose a book for the group--no waiting and passing the book around. They can have the shared experience right away.

Another program I love is Battle of the Books. It's great at getting kids out of the rut of reading one genre. It gets kids reading and talking about the set of books in the battle, and because it's a competition, parents (even non-reading parents) get caught up in the excitement. Many booksellers shelve the Battle books all together and find they move well. Because so many kids are reading the Battle list, teachers often read it too and incorporate the books in classroom discussion making it a community experience that has real impact.
