I have to disagree with this comment: "a parent faces a relatively high cost (say $16) for a relatively short immersion experience (32, 40, 48 pages plus the effort the parent puts into
engaging the child spread by spread)."
Picture books are meant to be read over and over again! When you think abou t it, you really only read a novel once or so but little kids want their favorite
picture books read countless times. Sometimes the same book every night. So that money for one book is a bargain! Just pick smartly.
The problem is parents aren't being guided to the right books. When they co me into the stores they want the latest celebrity books because they were push ed on TV but those books give picture books a bad name. They're usually badly wri tten, have bad pacing, bad everything.
Another huge problem is stores like B&N. The store always had a picture boo k wall to display new books but have now gotten rid of it. Where will the new
books go? Spine out. This kind of thing is only ensuring that new good book s won't sell. The only thing shoppers will see is the new card baord display with the latest Madonna book.
