Consider:
The Orphan of Ellis Island. Elvira Woodruff. Captain Grey. Avi. Seer of Shadows. Avi. Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg. W. R. Philbrick. Whipping Boy. Sid Fleischman. Children of the Longhouse. Joseph Bruchac.
These are at the older end of the range you have specified, but I can say that they have been enjoyed by 3rd and 4th graders at my school.
There is also Patricia Polacco's long picture book for older audiences: Pink and Say.
And, of course, the raucous Time Warp Trio books by Scieszka.
