One more announcement!
Those of you in Arizona or nearby states... Consider attending the Combating Hate, Censorship & Forbidden Curricula Conference at the University of AZ, December 2-4.
The preliminary schedule is here: . html
When you visit Dr. Cintli Rodriguez's site, take a look at his entry on Oct 31, 2010. There, he uploaded a scan of a poster used by the Arizona Republican Party in opposition of Arizona's Congressman Grijalva. Grijalva's photograph was used, but a large mustache was overlaid on it, which Rodriguez says "unleashes a blatant Mexican stereotype made to elicit fear, hate and revulsion." That may sound over-the-top to some, but I'm right there with Rodriguez in my own thinking about the work that stereotypical imagery does. As we know, Grijalva won his race, but in Arizona, ethnic studies are under attack. Most people know about SB 1070, but not many know about the bill signed a month later. In it, schools that continue to offer courses in Mexican-American history and literature and African-American literature, will lose 10% of state funding. You can read the NY Times story (dated May 13) here:
