An announcement about the Navajo language: I am excited to announce that t he RosettaStone now has available: Navajo, Dine'Bizaad. More than a h un dred native speakers of Navajo have participated in this project that provi des an opportunity to learn Navajo in the classroom or in the home. Navajo is one of many languages that are part of a grant to RosettaStone to recor d and to teach endangered languages. All proceeds from purchases go toward future Navajo language revitalization projects as part of Navajo Language Renaissance. The obvious link to children's literature is that Navajo children have one more resource that supports reading their own literature in their own langu age. The importance of this has been stated beautifully by Earl Shorris in "The Last Word:" There are nine different words in Maya for the color blu e...but just three Spanish translations, leaving six butterflies that c an be seen only by the Maya, proving beyond doubt that when a language di es , six butterflies disappear from the c onsciousness of the earth."
